Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has seen his estimated net worth surge past $50 billion following a major revaluation linked to his landmark refinery project, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaires ranking.

As of mid-September 2026, Dangote’s fortune was estimated at about $51.3 billion, placing him 36th among the world’s richest people and ahead of several prominent global billionaires.

Key Highlights

  • Dangote’s estimated fortune rises to about $51.3 billion.
  • He ranks 36th globally on Forbes’ real-time billionaires list.
  • Dangote Refinery was valued at about $40 billion to $42 billion following a private placement.
  • The refinery’s public offering opened on the Nigerian Exchange on September 14, 2026.
  • Up to 4.1 billion shares are being offered at ₦525 per share.
  • The IPO could raise about ₦2.15 trillion ($1.6 billion).
  • Proceeds will support plans to increase refinery capacity toward 1.4 million barrels per day.

Refinery Revaluation Drives Wealth Surge

The sharp increase in Dangote’s wealth follows a private placement by Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals earlier in 2026.

The transaction reportedly raised about $2.5 billion and valued the refinery at approximately $40 billion to $42 billion. Dangote’s controlling stake, diluted to about 87 percent after the placement, consequently received a clearer market-based valuation.

The revaluation significantly increased the estimated value of Dangote’s stake and became the main driver of the billionaire’s latest wealth surge.

The development marks a significant change from earlier Forbes estimates, which had placed Dangote’s fortune at about $31.5 billion in early September and lower levels earlier in the year.

Dangote Refinery IPO Opens on Nigerian Exchange

The public offering of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals shares opened on the Nigerian Exchange on September 14, 2026.

The company is offering up to 4.1 billion ordinary shares, representing about 3.3 percent of the company, at ₦525 per share. The offer is targeting approximately ₦2.15 trillion in proceeds.

The minimum subscription is 10 shares, making the offering accessible to a broad range of Nigerian investors.

The offer is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026, while trading is expected to commence in November.

Dangote has said proceeds from the offering will help fund expansion plans that could increase the refinery’s capacity toward 1.4 million barrels per day.

Dangote Moves Into Global Top 40

The latest wealth estimate places Dangote among the world’s 40 richest individuals, representing a significant rise from his earlier position on global billionaire rankings.

His wealth remains closely linked to his industrial interests, including cement, fertilizer, sugar and petroleum refining.

The refinery has become increasingly important to Dangote’s overall wealth following its valuation through the private placement and the launch of the public offering.

The development also highlights the growing importance of large African industrial assets and the potential impact of transparent market valuations on the fortunes of their owners.

Further Wealth Gains Possible

Dangote’s ranking could change further as the refinery becomes publicly traded and investors establish a market valuation for the company.

Any significant increase in the refinery’s valuation could further raise the value of Dangote’s remaining stake, although his ownership percentage would decline if additional shares are sold.

For now, the refinery IPO has strengthened Dangote’s position as Africa’s richest person and placed him firmly among the world’s wealthiest individuals.
