Former Nigerian international footballer Kanu Nwankwo has visited Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to present a proposal for the establishment of a Governor’s Cup aimed at discovering and developing young football talents across the state.
Kanu, accompanied by members of his team, presented the proposal on Tuesday during a meeting with Governor Fintiri at the Government House in Yola.

Fintiri said his administration would provide the necessary support to develop football and create opportunities for talented young people across Adamawa.
The governor said any government that neglects youth development through sports risks being left behind, adding that the proposed competition would provide young footballers, particularly those in rural communities, with an opportunity to showcase their abilities.
According to Fintiri, the Adamawa Governor’s Cup would cover all 21 local government areas, with the final expected to be played at the new stadium being constructed by his administration.
He said Adamawa was blessed with numerous talented young footballers who only needed the right platform and an effective scouting system to be discovered.
Fintiri added that the competition would be professionally organised and monitored by international scouts to ensure that genuine talents are identified and given opportunities to advance their careers.
Fintiri Warns Against Political Interference
The governor warned against political interference and favouritism in the selection of participants, insisting that only players with genuine football ability should be allowed to compete.
“Let it not be about who you know or your political connection. Let the best talents be discovered and developed,” he said.
Fintiri also expressed support for Kanu’s proposal for a six-kilometre health awareness walk and free medical screening for residents as part of activities surrounding the tournament.

He urged residents, particularly those above 35, to regularly monitor their blood pressure and cholesterol levels as part of efforts to prevent heart-related diseases.
The governor assured Kanu and his team that a committee would be constituted immediately to coordinate the Governor’s Cup and make the necessary arrangements for the competition.
Kanu Pledges Support for Adamawa Football Development
Earlier, Kanu said he accepted the invitation to Adamawa because of the development taking place in the state under Governor Fintiri.
The former Super Eagles captain said football had provided him with an opportunity to succeed and that young people in Adamawa deserved similar opportunities to pursue their dreams.
Kanu said the proposed Governor’s Cup would take football to all 21 local government areas, where scouts would identify promising players and recommend outstanding talents for further development.
He added that exceptional players would be exposed to professional football clubs and other opportunities within the sport.
Kanu Heart Foundation to Support Medical Programme
Kanu also pledged the readiness of his Kanu Heart Foundation to collaborate with the Adamawa State Government on free medical screening and support for residents suffering from heart-related conditions.
He disclosed that the foundation had so far supported more than 700 open-heart surgeries.
Kanu proposed that the medical activities should be organised around the Governor’s Cup final and the commissioning or opening of the new stadium.
The proposed initiative is expected to combine grassroots football development and health awareness, while creating a structured pathway for talented young footballers in Adamawa State to gain wider exposure and pursue professional careers.
