Shell Petroleum Development Company has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high safety standards across its operations and contractor network in Nigeria.

The company restated its position at its annual Leadership and Contractor CEO Conference held in Lagos, where chief executives of contracting companies gathered to discuss ways of strengthening safety performance across Shell’s businesses.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Shell Communications Manager, Mrs Gladys Afam-Anadu, the conference ended on Tuesday and was themed “Learn. Adapt. Improve.”

The event focused on strengthening collaboration between Shell and its contractors while promoting safer operations, improved performance and effective leadership.

Speaking at the conference, the Executive Vice President and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mrs Elohor Aiboni, said safety remained the most important measure of success in the company’s projects and operations.

“Shell is delivering an extensive portfolio of projects and operations that will help meet Nigeria’s growing energy needs, create value for our stakeholders and support national development.

“But no matter how significant the opportunity or important the project, our success will always be measured first by how safely we deliver it. That is why this conference matters,” Aiboni said.

The conference featured technical discussions, experience-sharing sessions, an exhibition and recognition of contractors who recorded outstanding safety performance.

One of the major highlights was the signing of the Leadership Charter, which was jointly developed in 2025 by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) and its contractor partners.

The charter is designed to strengthen leadership accountability and promote a consistent approach to safety across Shell’s contractor network.

SNEPCo Managing Director, Mr Ronald Adams, said the theme of the conference reflected the principles behind the charter, particularly the need for organisations to learn from experience and respond effectively to challenges.

“To learn, we must be honest about what has worked, what has been difficult, and what our people and operations are telling us.

“To adapt, we must be willing to adjust our approach where the realities of work require us to do better,” Adams said.

He stressed that the commitments contained in the charter should be reflected in leadership practices, employee engagement, performance assessments and the day-to-day management of operations.

Aiboni also emphasised the importance of ensuring that every worker involved in Shell’s activities returns home safely after each working day.

“Every person who works for Shell or on behalf of Shell deserves to return home safely to their family, every day, without exception,” she said.

The company said the conference reinforced its approach of learning from operational experiences, adapting to changing realities and continuously improving safety standards.

It also reaffirmed Shell’s commitment to working with contractors and other partners to strengthen safety performance across its operations in Nigeria.
