Key Highlights:

  • Nigeria joins global observance of World Humanitarian Day 2026.
  • Government unveils plans to strengthen local humanitarian response.
  • Minister highlights One Humanitarian, One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS).
  • Stakeholders call for increased funding and better welfare for humanitarian workers.

The event, held in Abuja, brought together government officials, humanitarian and development partners, civil society organisations and private-sector stakeholders to recognise the efforts of humanitarian workers supporting communities affected by crises, displacement and poverty.

The 2026 commemoration was themed “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities”, focusing on the role of local actors in protecting lives, restoring dignity and building stronger communities.

Speaking at the event and the third edition of the Humanitarian and Development Roundtable, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, said the theme must go beyond discussions and translate into practical solutions for Nigerians facing humanitarian challenges.

Doro said sustainable humanitarian intervention should focus on strengthening national institutions and empowering communities to withstand, recover from and overcome crises.

He highlighted the Ministry’s One Humanitarian, One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS) as a key initiative designed to integrate humanitarian assistance, social protection and poverty reduction programmes into a coordinated national framework.

According to the minister, emergency support should not end after a crisis situation improves but must create pathways for recovery, resilience and long-term economic stability.

He also called for increased domestic financing for humanitarian programmes, stressing the importance of improving the welfare, training, remuneration and professional development of humanitarian workers operating in difficult environments.

The minister noted that humanitarian personnel often work under challenging and dangerous conditions while providing support to vulnerable populations.

The commemoration brought together stakeholders who reaffirmed the importance of partnership, solidarity and respect for human dignity in addressing humanitarian challenges.

Participants stressed the need to build resilient communities where citizens can actively contribute to their recovery and development.

Doro urged government agencies, development partners and private organisations to sustain compassion, cooperation and decisive action in responding to humanitarian needs across Nigeria.
