Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, will on Thursday inaugurate the newly completed Permanent Secretaries’ quarters in Asaba, as the state government reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of civil servants.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, disclosed this on Tuesday while inspecting the completed residential complex ahead of the inauguration.

Emu said the administration considered civil servants critical partners in implementing government policies and programmes, adding that several measures had been introduced to improve their welfare and professional development.

Key Highlights

  • Oborevwori will inaugurate the Permanent Secretaries’ quarters on Thursday.
  • The complex comprises 12 four-bedroom residences.
  • The quarters are equipped with air conditioning and other facilities.
  • The government says the complex will have 24-hour power supply and security.
  • Delta civil servants have benefited from vehicle allowances, loans and training programmes.
  • Government is also exploring housing options for other categories of civil servants.

According to the SSG, civil servants in Delta State are benefiting from improved working conditions, including a three-day working arrangement, vehicle allowances, access to loans and opportunities for training and capacity development.

“Today, civil servants are seen doing three working days round. That’s a lot of convenience. We have paid vehicle allowances and made provisions for loans for them. We send them on training,” Emu said.

The SSG said the state had committed significant resources to workforce development, adding that he personally approves training-related matters as part of efforts to strengthen the capacity of civil servants.

He said Governor Oborevwori considers civil servants friends and indispensable partners in governance, stressing that their welfare remains a priority of the administration.

“Civil servants are friends to the government. The government loves them. Our Permanent Secretaries are driving brand new vehicles,” Emu said.

12 Permanent Secretaries’ Residences Completed

Speaking about the newly completed quarters, Emu described the buildings as befitting the status of Permanent Secretaries, who constitute the highest administrative cadre in the state civil service.

“The entire PS complex are for civil servants. The Permanent Secretaries are the apex of the civil service. We have these new, elegant edifices. We have 12 of them, four bedrooms each, with all air-conditioned and then with all the facilities that you can think of,” he said.

Emu added that the complex would have round-the-clock electricity, paved roads and adequate security.

“There’s going to be unlimited power here, 24-7. The roads are well paved and they are well secured,” he stated.

The SSG said the housing project formed part of wider welfare interventions by the Oborevwori administration aimed at improving the living and working conditions of public servants.

He also said the government was taking steps to accommodate retired and former civil servants, noting that some former workers had been reintegrated into government programmes.

Government Plans More Housing for Civil Servants

Emu explained that the government’s housing programme would not end with the Permanent Secretaries’ quarters.

He said the administration was working on alternative housing arrangements for other categories of civil servants through partnerships with private developers and the Federal Mortgage Bank.

The SSG maintained that the government’s investment in civil servants was justified by their role as the implementing arm of government.

“Governor Oborevwori is not just for the people. He’s even so much so for the civil servants because he believes that they lay the golden eggs,” Emu said.

The inauguration of the Permanent Secretaries’ quarters is expected to further highlight the Delta State Government’s ongoing investment in civil servants’ welfare and housing.
