An initial investment of $16.8 billion has been committed for the first phase. Why Terafab?
Musk and the companies have repeatedly stressed that Tesla and SpaceX (along with related efforts involving xAI) will require far more advanced chips than existing global production can deliver. The target is production supporting over 1 terawatt of AI compute capacity per year.
Current global and U.S. semiconductor output falls well short of the projected demand for edge-inference processors powering Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercab robotaxis, as well as high-power chips intended for SpaceX’s planned orbital data centers.
Terafab is envisioned as a vertically integrated operation combining logic, memory, advanced packaging, and testing under one roof. This approach is intended to enable faster iteration and recursive improvements in chip design and production. Intel is involved as a partner, with plans to leverage its 14A process technology. A smaller research or precursor fab broke ground in April 2026 on the North Campus of Giga Texas near Austin to prototype ideas and processes ahead of the full-scale Grimes County complex.
Musk has roughly estimated that about 25% of Terafab’s AI compute output could support Tesla’s Optimus and related products, with the remaining majority directed toward SpaceX’s space-based systems.
