The Sokoto State Government has approved N1.759 billion for the purchase of 1,000 Bajaj motorcycles to improve the mobility of security personnel and strengthen operations against banditry across the state.
The decision was reached at the sixth regular meeting of the Sokoto State Executive Council for 2026, presided over by the Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammad Gobir.
The motorcycles are expected to complement the 62 armoured vehicles recently acquired by the state government at a reported cost of N27 billion and deployed to security agencies.
A statement issued on Thursday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abubakar Bawa, said the latest procurement was aimed at improving the ability of security personnel to operate in difficult-to-access communities and terrains.
According to the state government, the motorcycles would provide security agencies with greater flexibility in areas where larger vehicles may face mobility challenges, particularly communities affected by banditry.
Bawa said the procurement was part of the administration’s broader effort to provide security agencies with the logistics required to respond more effectively to criminal activities.
He quoted the council as saying, “The procurement of the 1,000 motorcycles is aimed at complementing the recently procured armoured vehicles and enhancing the operational capacity of security agencies across the state.”

Beyond security, the council approved funding for several projects covering education, healthcare, skills development and water infrastructure.
Among the approvals was N723.17 million for the renovation of Government Technical College, Runjin Sambo.
The council also approved N498.99 million for the rehabilitation of A.A. Raji Special School and N489.32 million for Phase I renovation work at the College of Nursing Sciences.
A further N229.36 million was approved for the renovation of male and female hostels at the College of Basic and Remedial Studies.
At the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Wurno, the council approved N174.64 million for the renovation of staff quarters and improvement of the institution’s perimeter fencing.
In the healthcare sector, N133.67 million was approved for the construction of a perimeter fence at Wamakko Primary Health Centre.
The council also approved N93.88 million for the procurement of vocational training equipment for 46 women’s vocational centres spread across the state’s 23 local government areas.
Another N90.21 million was allocated for the purchase of PVC pipes and plumbing materials required for the maintenance of 142 semi-urban water supply schemes across Sokoto State.
Bawa said the range of approvals reflected the state government’s focus on addressing security challenges while simultaneously investing in infrastructure, education, healthcare and human capital development.
He added that the executive council meeting, which lasted approximately two hours, considered a number of issues relating to the security and socio-economic development of the state.
The latest security investment comes as Sokoto and other parts of north-western Nigeria continue to face security challenges linked to banditry, with authorities seeking to improve the operational capacity and mobility of security agencies deployed to vulnerable communities.
