The navy and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have moved to deepen their collaboration on maritime security with the signing of a fresh five-year memorandum of understanding, aimed at protecting Nigeria’s waters and strengthening the country’s blue economy.

The agreement was signed at the Nigerian Navy Headquarters in Abuja, on Wednesday, in the presence of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, NIMASA Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Dayo Mobereola, and senior officials from both institutions.
The renewed partnership is expected to improve coordination between the navy and NIMASA in tackling security and safety challenges across Nigeria’s maritime domain.
The two agencies have maintained a working relationship since 2007, with successive renewals of their partnership.
The latest agreement is designed to take the collaboration further by aligning their respective mandates, operational capabilities and technical expertise.

Speaking ahead of the signing, Mobereola described the renewal as a reaffirmation of the commitment of both organisations to the security, safety, sustainability and prosperity of Nigeria’s maritime domain.
He stressed that Nigeria’s economic fortunes are closely tied to the sea, making the protection of the country’s maritime space a national priority.
The NIMASA boss also recognised the navy as a critical pillar of the country’s maritime security architecture, acknowledging the Navy’s operational support to the agency in carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
The new agreement is expected to strengthen operational alignment and improve cooperation between the two institutions, with the ultimate goal of producing measurable gains in maritime safety and security.
Beyond security, the collaboration is also expected to support the development of Nigeria’s Blue Economy by creating a stronger framework for protecting maritime activities and promoting a safer environment for legitimate economic operations.
