Nearly three decades after the fatal shooting of rap icon Tupac Shakur, the long-running mystery surrounding his death is set to enter a courtroom, with former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis facing trial in Las Vegas.
Davis, 63, was arrested and charged in 2023 in connection with Shakur’s 1996 murder. He has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder involving a deadly weapon and alleged gang-related activity. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment without parole.
Jury selection has begun, with opening arguments expected on 17 August.
Tupac was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling through Las Vegas with then-Death Row Records boss Suge Knight after attending a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand.

Earlier that night, surveillance footage captured Tupac and members of his entourage involved in a confrontation with Orlando Anderson, who was associated with the South Side Compton Crips.
Hours later, a white Cadillac reportedly pulled alongside Knight’s BMW and gunmen opened fire. Tupac was struck four times and died six days later at the age of 25.
The murder remained unsolved for almost 30 years, becoming one of the most enduring mysteries in music history.
Davis, who was Anderson’s uncle, later became a key figure in the investigation after publicly discussing his alleged knowledge of the shooting.
In a 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, which he co-authored, Davis said he was inside the vehicle involved in the shooting and claimed to have disposed of the gun afterwards. He has never admitted to being the person who fired the shots.
Prosecutors now allege that Davis helped orchestrate the attack as retaliation for the earlier confrontation involving his nephew.
However, Davis’s defence is expected to challenge the credibility of the memoir. His lawyers argue that parts of the book were embellished or fictionalised for commercial purposes.
Davis has also disputed his involvement, recently telling a local television station that he did not personally write the book and that it was produced by a ghostwriter.
The trial is expected to examine the violent rivalry that surrounded the American hip-hop industry in the 1990s, particularly the feud between Death Row Records, associated with Tupac, and Bad Boy Records, linked to The Notorious B.I.G.
The deaths of Tupac and Biggie, who was killed in Los Angeles months after Tupac’s murder, became defining moments in the history of hip-hop.
More than 200 potential witnesses have reportedly been identified by prosecutors, including members of Tupac’s family, former Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman and former Los Angeles police detective Greg Kading.
Suge Knight has also been listed as a potential witness, although it remains uncertain whether he will testify.
Davis has previously claimed that Sean “Diddy” Combs offered $1 million for the killing of Tupac and Knight. Combs has repeatedly denied any involvement in Tupac’s death.
The allegation is separate from the charge Davis is facing in the Las Vegas case.
After years of investigations, disappearing witnesses and a lack of sufficient physical evidence, prosecutors now hope the trial will finally provide answers about one of music’s most notorious unsolved killings.
For fans who have followed the case for decades, the proceedings could represent the most significant attempt yet to establish what happened on the night Tupac Shakur was fatally shot.
