Cross River Landslide: Police Appeal for Calm as Obutong Community Seeks Urgent Government Intervention

Landslides continue to threaten several communities in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, with the latest incident occurring at Anansa Junction, between WAPI Junction and the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory, prompting growing concern among residents.

The worsening erosion has triggered agitation among residents of Obutong Community, who are calling for urgent government intervention to prevent further destruction of lives and property.

 

Addressing the affected residents, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, DCP Godwin Etim Effiong, appealed for calm and urged the community to remain peaceful while government response efforts continue.

 

The Acting Commissioner of Police, accompanied by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Pius Arikpo Edet, assured residents that the Cross River State Government is taking concrete steps to address the environmental challenge.

The delegation also included the Commissioner for Environment, Barr. Mensah Bassey Offiong, the Special Assistant on General Duties, and the Special Assistant on Security Surveillance, who jointly inspected the affected area.

 

According to the police, the state government has already initiated measures to tackle the landslide and mitigate further risks.

 

Residents were advised to avoid the affected sections of the community for their safety and to cooperate with relevant authorities as intervention and remediation efforts continue.

 

The Cross River State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while working closely with the state government and other stakeholders to safeguard lives and property.
