The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed the deaths of two residents who drowned during an early morning downpour in Damaturu, highlighting the growing dangers posed by heavy rainfall and flooding in urban communities.
The victims, identified as 38-year-old Isa Haruna and 18-year-old Abba Kyari, reportedly lost their lives in separate incidents in the Malam Matari and Pompomari areas of the Yobe State capital.
According to SEMA, its search and rescue team, working alongside the Yobe State Fire Service, was immediately deployed after distress alerts were received from the affected communities.
Despite the swift response, emergency personnel arrived to find that both victims had already died.
The bodies were recovered and transported to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Yobe State Specialist Hospital, Damaturu.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks associated with heavy rainfall, particularly in flood-prone areas where overflowing drainage channels and submerged roads can become life-threatening within minutes.

In the wake of the tragedy, SEMA appealed to residents to exercise extreme caution during periods of intense rainfall.
The agency specifically warned against attempting to cross flooded roads, culverts, and drainage channels, noting that fast-moving floodwaters can be deeper and more dangerous than they appear.
Emergency officials also urged community members to remain alert to weather conditions, heed safety advisories, and promptly report emergencies to relevant authorities to facilitate timely rescue efforts.
As the rainy season continues, disaster management experts stress that public awareness, improved drainage infrastructure, and strict adherence to safety precautions remain critical to reducing flood-related casualties across the state.
