The Lagos State Government has officially released the harmonised academic calendar for the 2026/2027 school year, directing all public and private primary and secondary schools to resume academic activities on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The schedule, approved by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, provides a unified framework for school operations throughout the session and is expected to guide teaching, learning and other academic activities across the state.
Announcing the calendar in a statement on Thursday, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, said the document was produced after extensive consultations with education stakeholders through the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA).
According to him, representatives of public and private schools, education administrators and other stakeholders participated in meetings that reviewed and agreed on the academic timetable before it received government approval.

The approved calendar indicates that the first term will commence on September 14, 2026, and end on December 21, 2026, while students will observe a one-week mid-term break from November 2 to November 6.
Academic activities for the second term are scheduled to begin on January 11, 2027, with the term ending in April 2027. The third term will start on May 3 and conclude on July 30, 2027, after which schools will proceed on the long vacation beginning August 2, 2027.
Altogether, pupils are expected to spend 182 instructional days in classrooms during the 2026/2027 academic session.
The commissioner said the harmonised timetable demonstrates the state’s commitment to ensuring a stable, predictable and well-coordinated school calendar that supports effective teaching and learning.
He directed both public and privately owned schools to comply fully with the approved schedule.
As part of preparations for the new session, schools have also been permitted to organise staff professional development programmes by selecting any two days between September 7 and September 11, 2026, depending on their individual schedules.
The calendar equally retains Open Day activities as compulsory events for schools, although each institution may determine the most suitable dates within the approved period.
The document recognises several national and international observances, including Nigeria’s Independence Day, World Teachers’ Day, International Literacy Day, International Day of Education, Children’s Day, Workers’ Day and Democracy Day, alongside public holidays declared by the Federal Government.
Religious holidays such as Eid-el-Fitr, Eid-el-Kabir, Good Friday and Easter Monday have also been incorporated into the academic timetable.
Schools operating foreign or international curricula that require different academic schedules have been instructed to seek approval from the state government by submitting a Calendar Flexibility Application on or before Friday, August 21, 2026.
The Lagos State Government advised school proprietors, teachers, parents and other stakeholders to consult the complete academic calendar through the official platforms of the Office of Education Quality Assurance (http://oeqalagos.com), and other authorised Lagos State Government digital channels for comprehensive details.
