Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, on Saturday flagged off the construction of a 100-bed General Hospital in Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area, fulfilling a promise he made earlier in the week to improve healthcare delivery in the area.
Key Highlights:
- Governor Zulum launched the construction of a 100-bed hospital in Kwaya Kusar.
- The existing General Hospital will also be renovated and upgraded.
- Eight healthcare workers were approved for immediate recruitment.
- Zulum inspected ongoing school and hospital projects across Southern Borno.
- He pledged to complete all projects before leaving office.
The groundbreaking ceremony came just days after the governor, during the flag-off of the 2026 Wet Farming Season and the launch of subsidised fertiliser and agricultural inputs distribution on Wednesday, pledged to build a modern hospital for the community.
Speaking at the event, Zulum said the new facility would complement the existing General Hospital in Kwaya Kusar, which would also undergo renovation and be equipped with modern medical facilities to enhance healthcare services for residents and neighbouring communities.
“We were here on Wednesday during the flag-off of the Wet Farming Season and the sales of fertilizer and agricultural inputs to farmers. We promised the people of this local government that we would construct a befitting 100-bed capacity General Hospital,” the governor said.
“In fulfilment of my promise to the people of Kwaya Kusar, we are here today to lay the foundation of this hospital, and it is my sincere hope that the construction will be completed within six months,” he added.
Zulum also approved the immediate recruitment of one nurse, five Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs), and two Medical Records Officers to strengthen healthcare delivery in the area.
Briefing the governor on the project, the Senior Technical Assistant on Special Projects, Engr. Emmanuel Yerima Gadzama, said the hospital would be fully equipped with facilities expected of a modern general hospital.

“This is a 100-bed capacity General Hospital. It will have all the facilities expected of a modern General Hospital. We are delighted that Your Excellency is here to lay the foundation of the hospital,” Gadzama said.
Meanwhile, governor Zulum continued his working tour of Southern Borno by inspecting several ongoing projects across four local government areas. The projects include the construction of a 48-classroom Higher Islamic College in Shani, a 36-classroom Mega School in Marama, a 48-classroom Integrated Mega School in Shaffa, a 100-bed General Hospital in Shaffa, and the General Hospital in Briyel.
The governor expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work at the various project sites, commending contractors for their commitment.
“I am delighted to have visited these five local government areas in Southern Borno. We have seen the level of commitment demonstrated by our contractors. We have inspected several projects. This is the General Hospital in Azare, one of the ten General Hospitals currently under construction across the state. I am pleased with the quality of work. Opposite it is the Integrated Mega School, and I am equally satisfied with the standard of construction,” Zulum stated.
He reassured residents that all projects initiated by his administration would be completed before the expiration of his tenure.
“We are winding down our administration, and we will ensure that all the projects we have started are completed, In Shaa Allah. We will also establish institutional arrangements that will guarantee the sustainability of these projects,” the governor said.
