South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
Reports on Saturday confirmed the passing of the talented midfielder, who recently featured for South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Adams played in all three of Bafana Bafana’s group-stage matches and was among the substitutes during the team’s 1-0 Round of 32 defeat to Canada, earning praise for his performances throughout the tournament.
Following the World Cup, Mamelodi Sundowns had reportedly granted the midfielder an extended break after a demanding club season and international campaign.

As of the time of filing this report, the club had yet to issue an official statement on his death, while the cause of death has not been made public.
The South African Football Players’ Union (SAFPU) described Adams’ death as a devastating loss to his family, teammates, supporters and the nation’s football fraternity.
Widely regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest football prospects, Adams established himself as a key figure for both Mamelodi Sundowns and the national team, with many tipping him for an even greater career on the international stage.
Tributes have continued to pour in from players, clubs, football administrators and fans across Africa, all remembering a gifted midfielder whose promising career was tragically cut short at the age of 25.
