Ogun State has taken a significant step toward joining Nigeria’s league of oil-producing states following the commencement of drilling operations by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) at the Eba Well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
Key Highlights:
- NNPCL commences Drilling at Eba Well in Ogun State.
- Governor Dapo Abiodun says the project will diversify the state’s economy.
- Ogun moves closer to attaining oil-producing state status.
- Successful production could increase state revenue through the 13% derivation fund.
- Project expected to stimulate job creation, industrial growth and infrastructure development.
- Environmental sustainability and community engagement identified as key priorities.
The commencement of drilling marks a major milestone in Ogun State’s economic diversification agenda, with government officials expressing confidence that the project will unlock new investment opportunities, boost internally generated revenue and position the state as an emerging player in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
Governor Dapo Abiodun described the development as the fulfilment of his administration’s commitment to expand Ogun’s economic base beyond agriculture, manufacturing and commerce.

According to the governor, geological assessments have revealed significant hydrocarbon potential within the Eba Well and surrounding areas, including parts of Ijebu East, raising optimism about the state’s long-term prospects in the oil and gas sector.
The oil exploration initiative follows years of geological investigations after hydrocarbon seepages were reportedly discovered in parts of Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. Following technical evaluations, President Bola Tinubu approved commercial drilling activities after confirming the viability of crude oil deposits within the area.
Authorities clarified that the ongoing drilling operations are taking place at Eba Well, despite earlier public discussions surrounding Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area, another location believed to possess hydrocarbon potential.
The Ogun State Government also reaffirmed its ownership of the drilling location, maintaining that Eba Well lies within Ogun’s territorial boundaries amid previous boundary-related claims involving neighbouring Ondo State.
Industry analysts view the project as part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to expand crude oil exploration beyond the traditional Niger Delta region by developing frontier basins capable of increasing national crude oil production.
If commercial production is achieved, Ogun State could qualify as one of Nigeria’s oil-producing states and become eligible for the statutory 13 per cent derivation allocation provided to oil-producing states under the country’s revenue-sharing formula.
Beyond increased government revenue, experts believe the project could stimulate investment across the petroleum value chain, including refining, petrochemicals, marine logistics and other energy-related industries.
Governor Abiodun also linked the oil exploration project to other strategic infrastructure initiatives, including the proposed revival of the Olokola Deep Seaport under the Blue Marine Economic Zone initiative, which is expected to strengthen export capacity and complement the state’s growing industrial base.
Residents of Ogun Waterside have welcomed the commencement of drilling with cautious optimism, expressing hope that the project will translate into improved infrastructure, employment opportunities and sustainable community development.
However, environmental experts have stressed the need for strict compliance with international environmental standards, particularly given the sensitive mangrove ecosystem surrounding the drilling area.
Stakeholders have also called for transparent engagement with host communities to ensure that economic benefits are shared fairly while minimising environmental risks commonly associated with oil exploration.
As drilling activities continue, the commercial viability of the Eba Well will be determined through ongoing exploration and production assessments. Industry observers say the success of the project could significantly strengthen Nigeria’s energy sector while opening a new chapter in Ogun State’s economic development.
