The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Governor Douye Diri to make Bayelsa poverty reduction and the fight against hunger, unemployment and economic hardship the top priorities of his administration in the second half of 2026.
Key Highlights
- PDP urges Governor Douye Diri to prioritise Bayelsa poverty reduction.
- Party expresses concern over rising hunger, unemployment and cost of living.
- Calls for job creation, economic stimulation and support for SMEs.
- Urges greater investment in youth and women empowerment programmes.
- Seeks implementation of investment agreements to drive industrial growth.
- Reaffirms commitment to supporting policies that improve residents’ welfare.
The call was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Bayelsa PDP State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, who said many residents are struggling to cope with rising living costs and declining purchasing power.
According to the party, despite increased derivation revenue and improved federal allocations to Bayelsa State, many citizens have continued to face worsening economic conditions.
The PDP stated that hunger and poverty have become widespread across communities, stressing that improving the welfare of citizens should remain the primary responsibility of government.
The party urged the state government to implement policies that would stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities and provide greater support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
It also called for increased investment in youth and women empowerment initiatives as part of broader efforts to improve household incomes and raise living standards across the state.
The opposition party expressed concern that several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) announced by the current administration had yet to translate into tangible local or foreign investments.
According to the PDP, government should move beyond signing agreements by ensuring such partnerships deliver measurable economic benefits through industrial development, business expansion and sustainable job creation.
The party further maintained that although the present administration came into office with a prosperity agenda, many residents continue to grapple with unemployment, economic hardship and declining living standards.
It therefore urged the government to strengthen public institutions, invest in labour-intensive industries and develop a comprehensive wealth creation and employment strategy capable of addressing the state’s economic challenges.
The PDP advised the administration to adopt more people-centred policies that respond directly to prevailing socio-economic realities while reaffirming its readiness to support genuine initiatives aimed at reducing hardship in the state.

The party also pledged to continue offering constructive policy recommendations in the interest of Bayelsa’s development.
In addition, the PDP alleged that the APC-led Federal Government has not introduced sufficient innovative policies to effectively address the country’s growing economic challenges, which it said continue to impact states, including Bayelsa.
The party encouraged residents not to lose hope as the second half of 2026 begins, expressing optimism that improved governance and sound economic policies can deliver a better future for the people of Bayelsa.
