Fresh details have emerged concerning the death of Nollywood actor Junior Pope after the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) reportedly concluded that the tragic boat accident that claimed his life was caused by human negligence.

Junior Pope, whose real name was John Odonwodo, died in April 2024, alongside four others when a boat carrying a film crew capsized while they were travelling on the River Niger near Asaba, Delta State, for a movie production.

According to NIWA’s findings, the incident was not caused by engine failure, bad weather, or any obstacle on the waterway. The authority said the tragedy was linked to a failure to follow safety regulations.

NIWA Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji, reportedly explained at a transportation forum in Abuja, that some passengers allegedly failed to wear available life jackets before the journey.

He said the accident was a result of “flagrant disregard” for safety rules guiding movement on inland waterways.

The revelation has reopened discussions about safety standards in Nollywood and the need for stricter enforcement of water transport regulations.

Social commentator, Sam Dede reacted to the report, describing it as a painful reminder that safety practices should not be ignored, and called for reforms within the film industry.

The report has also triggered mixed reactions from Nigerians online.

While some agreed that failure to follow safety procedures may have contributed to the tragedy, others questioned whether human negligence alone could explain why the boat capsized and demanded accountability.

What caused Junior Pope’s boat accident?

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) says the boat accident that claimed the life of Nollywood actor Junior Pope was caused by human negligence rather than mechanical failure, citing failure to comply with mandatory safety measures, including the use of life jackets.

A survivor of the accident had previously claimed that the full circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately disclosed, adding more public interest to the case.

The death of Junior Pope, a father of three and one of Nollywood’s popular actors, shocked fans across Nigeria and beyond.

The latest findings have renewed calls for improved safety measures on waterways and stricter compliance with regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
