Canada booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustaquio struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over South Africa in a tense Round of 32 clash on Sunday.

With both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities for much of the contest, the match appeared destined for extra time before Eustaquio delivered the decisive moment deep into added time.

Key Highlights:

  • Canada defeated South Africa 1–0 to reach the Round of 16.
  • Stephen Eustaquio scored the winning goal in stoppage time.
  • South Africa defended well but couldn’t force extra time.
  • The late goal ended Bafana Bafana’s impressive World Cup run.
  • Canada will face the winner of Netherlands vs. Morocco next.

South Africa, who impressed throughout the tournament to reach the knockout stage, defended resolutely and frustrated the tournament co-hosts for long spells. Bafana Bafana also felt they were denied a penalty after a challenge inside the box, but the referee waved away their appeals.

As the clock ticked into the second minute of five minutes of added time, Canada finally found the breakthrough. The ball fell kindly to Eustaquio on the edge of the penalty area, and the midfielder fired a powerful low strike into the bottom-left corner, leaving the South African goalkeeper with no chance.
