The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Friday, joined family members, football stakeholders and dignitaries from across the country to bid a final farewell to former Super Eagles coach and ex-NFF Technical Director, Adegboye Onigbinde, who was buried in Modakeke, Osun State.
The funeral service, held at Saint Stephen’s Cathedral in Modakeke, attracted government officials, royal fathers, political leaders, business executives, religious leaders, former Nigeria internationals, retired civil servants and community leaders, all of whom paid glowing tributes to the legendary tactician.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential football coaches, Onigbinde made history as the first indigenous coach to guide the Super Eagles to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations and the first Nigerian coach to lead the team at the FIFA World Cup.
He also served as Technical Adviser to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and later became a Technical Advisor to FIFA.
Representing the NFF, former Super Eagles captain and coach Augustine Eguavoen described the late Onigbinde as a trailblazer whose knowledge, discipline and commitment elevated indigenous coaching in Nigeria.

He noted that Onigbinde’s remarkable achievements, including leading Nigeria to an AFCON silver medal and mentoring generations of coaches through NFF coaching programmes after retirement, remain part of his enduring legacy.
Former Nigeria captain and member of the NFF Technical and Development Committee, Felix Owolabi, also praised Onigbinde for his vast football knowledge, integrity, courage and dedication to mentoring younger professionals.
Other notable personalities at the burial included former NFF General Secretary, Fanny Amun, NFF Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, former Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju, representatives of the Osun State government, traditional rulers, former international players and ex-players of Shooting Stars Sports Club.
As part of its support, the Nigeria Football Federation also made a financial donation to the family of the late football icon, reaffirming its appreciation for his immense contributions to Nigerian football.
