Ebonyi State plans to establish a new cement factory at Nkalagu in Ishielu Local Government Area of the state.
Key Highlights:
- Francis Nwifuru announced plans for a new cement factory in Nkalagu.
- The project will use limestone deposits expected to last over 30 years.
- The factory aims to create jobs and reduce building material costs.
- Ebonyi allocated N150bn in the 2026 budget for the project.
Governor, Francis Nwifuru, who stated this on Monday, while conducted Chinese contractors round NIGERCEM, Nkalagu, explained that the bottlenecks surrounding the reactivation of the old factory informed the state government’s decision to establish a new factory.
He said preliminary findings indicate that there are large deposits of limestones that will sustain the company when established for more than 30 years.
“We have 50 million tons of limestone in Nkalagu and 23 million tons at Effium and if put together will sustain the factory for a minimum of 30 years,” he said.
The governor said the company will be fully functional, creating jobs and crashing costs of building materials for not only the state, the South-East, but the nation in general.
As a responsive government alive to its social contracts, the governor stated that the establishment of the new factory is not politically motivated neither is it driven on opaque interests, but because it forms the industrialization components of his administration’s agenda.
“This is the part of the project we believe we must execute. We came with manufacturers, designers, builders and contractors. They will see the limestones,” he said.
