Human rights activist and African Action Congress (African Action Congress) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his remand at the Kuje Custodial Centre over his absence from a scheduled court appearance in an ongoing legal matter.

Key Highlights:

  • Omoyele Sowore was ordered by a court to be remanded at Kuje Custodial Centre over absence from trial.
  • He said he missed court due to consultations with his new legal team.
  • Sowore described the case against him as unjust and politically motivated.
  • He insisted imprisonment would not stop his struggle for justice and democracy.
  • He vowed that his movement and activism will continue despite the court order.

Sowore said his failure to appear before the court was due to consultations with his new legal team led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olumide-Fusika (SAN), adding that his counsel had formally informed the court of the development.

He, however, expressed disappointment that the court proceeded with the remand order despite what he described as a valid explanation already communicated to the judge.

According to him, the ruling would not weaken his resolve or the wider political struggle he is engaged in.

Describing the case against him as “bogus,” Sowore maintained that his legal and political battles were rooted in what he called a broader fight for justice, democracy, and national liberation.

He insisted that imprisonment has historically failed to suppress movements for change, stressing that his current detention would not be different.

“Imprisonment has never defeated a just cause, and it never will,” he said.

The activist further urged his supporters and members of his movement to remain steadfast, describing their campaign as part of a wider resistance against oppression and misrule in the country.

Reaffirming his position, Sowore declared: “The struggle continues. Victory is certain.”

The court had earlier ordered his remand at Kuje Custodial Centre after ruling on his absence from proceedings in the ongoing case.
