The Kano State Police Command has constituted a Special Investigation Panel to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of a 13-year-old JSS 2 boarding student of St. Louis Secondary School, Kano, following a petition filed by the family.

Spokesperson of the command, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, saying the panel was set up after the command received a formal petition from the family’s solicitors over the death of the student, identified as late Maimuna Sani Salisu.

According to the statement, the petition alleged that the school authorities informed the deceased’s parents on June 13, 2026, that she was ill and had been taken to International Clinic, Kano, for medical attention.

It added that the student’s elder sister, who was sent to the hospital, was informed on arrival that Maimuna had been confirmed dead.

The police said the family raised concerns over conflicting accounts surrounding the cause of death, noting that while the school reportedly attributed it to an asthma attack after she was late to the mosque, other accounts suggested she was allegedly punished by senior students.

The petitioners alleged that the student was flogged and made to kneel for an extended period for refusing to sweep, claiming the incident might have worsened her health condition.

Following the petition, the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Bakori, directed that a thorough investigation be conducted in line with accountability and human rights standards.

The command subsequently constituted a Special Investigation Panel led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Shehu Idris, including officials from the Kano State Ministry of Justice to ensure transparency and provide legal guidance during the investigation.

CSP Kiyawa said the panel had commenced investigations, adding that three teachers, three senior students of the school and two other witnesses had been invited and were cooperating with investigators.

He noted that statements had been obtained while medical, forensic and other evidence-gathering processes were ongoing to determine the actual cause of death.

The police assured the family, school community and members of the public that the investigation would be impartial and transparent, adding that anyone found culpable would face the law.
