The Plateau Initiative for Growth and Development (PIGD) has commended Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for initiatives aimed at expanding the state’s livestock sector and promoting economic diversification.

Key Highlights:

  • PIGD praised Caleb Mutfwang for livestock sector investments.
  • A 500-cattle-per-day abattoir will be built in Heipang.
  • A new Veterinary Teaching Hospital is planned in Barkin Ladi.
  • The projects aim to create jobs and attract investment.
  • PIGD says the initiatives will boost economic growth in Plateau State.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Nengak David, the group described the recent groundbreaking of a 500-cattle-per-day ultra-modern abattoir in Pwomol Village, Heipang, and a Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area as important steps toward strengthening Plateau’s agricultural and industrial base.

PIGD said the projects signal a deliberate effort to develop a more structured livestock value chain capable of creating jobs, attracting investment, and increasing internally generated revenue.

According to the group, the initiatives, being implemented under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) programme, are designed to leverage Plateau’s strengths in livestock farming, meat processing, animal health, and related agribusiness activities.

David noted that the planned abattoir would modernise meat processing by introducing improved slaughtering facilities and hygiene standards, replacing less efficient traditional methods.

He added that the project could enhance the competitiveness of Plateau’s livestock products while strengthening cold-chain infrastructure and opening access to broader domestic and international markets.

“The groundbreaking of a 500-cattle-per-day ultra-modern abattoir and a Veterinary Teaching Hospital is more than just another infrastructure project. It reflects a clear commitment to developing the livestock sector and expanding economic opportunities,” David said.

The group also praised the administration’s plans for the proposed Heipang Special Agro-Processing Zone, saying it has the potential to stimulate businesses involved in feed production, meat packaging, leather processing, transportation, and veterinary services.

PIGD further highlighted the importance of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, stating that it would support research, improve disease surveillance and animal healthcare, and contribute to the training of skilled professionals in the livestock industry.

The organisation called on host communities to support the successful execution of the projects and encouraged investors and development partners to explore opportunities within Plateau’s growing livestock value chain.

According to PIGD, the initiatives demonstrate the state government’s long-term strategy of using agriculture and agro-processing as drivers of sustainable economic growth and development.
