Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing to an end an illustrious career that saw him become one of the most recognizable Nigerian players in South African football.

Key Highlights:

  • Daniel Akpeyi retired from professional football at 39.
  • Spent ~10 years in South Africa’s PSL.
  • Made 220+ club appearances with 77 clean sheets.
  • Played for Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs.
  • Earned 19 caps for the Nigeria national football team, including AFCON 2019.

The 39-year-old shot-stopper made the announcement few hours ago at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena during the launch of the 2026 Toyota Cup, where he was unveiled as part of the Kaizer Chiefs Legends squad set to feature in a curtain-raiser exhibition match against the Jozi Masters in July.

Confirming his decision to hang up his gloves, Akpeyi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to remain connected to the game through the legends team.

“I have retired from active football,” Akpeyi said. “It feels exciting to be part of this legends team. I am privileged to be here so soon, and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

His retirement marks the end of a remarkable 10-year journey in South African football, where he established himself as one of the most experienced and dependable goalkeepers in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Akpeyi arrived in South Africa in 2015 from Nigeria and quickly adapted to the demands of the South African top flight.

During his PSL career, Akpeyi amassed more than 220 appearances and recorded 77 clean sheets, achievements that underscored his consistency, resilience and longevity at the highest level of South African football.

His most successful spell came with Chippa United, where a string of impressive performances earned him a move to Kaizer Chiefs, one of South Africa’s biggest and most supported clubs.

At Naturena, Akpeyi became a familiar figure between the posts and won the admiration of many supporters for his commitment and professionalism.

Although major trophies eluded him during his time with the Glamour Boys, his contributions helped solidify his reputation as one of the league’s most respected goalkeepers and a notable ambassador for Nigerian football abroad.

Beyond club football, Akpeyi also enjoyed a distinguished international career with the Nigerian national team. He earned 19 caps for the Super Eagles and represented the country in several major competitions.

One of the highlights of his international career came at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he served as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The Super Eagles went on to secure a third-place finish, earning a bronze medal after defeating Tunisia in the playoff match.

As tributes continue to pour in from former teammates, coaches and fans, Akpeyi leaves the game with a legacy built on dedication, perseverance and professionalism.

His decade-long impact on South African football and his contributions to Nigerian football ensure that his name will remain etched in the memories of supporters on both sides of the continent.

While his playing days may be over, Akpeyi’s inclusion in the Kaizer Chiefs Legends setup signals the beginning of a new chapter, one that will allow him to continue inspiring the next generation of footballers.
