The Cross Rivers State Government has begun a statewide safety assessment of trees across Calabar following a tree fall incident that injured a Bolt driver and damaged his vehicle along Mount Zion Road in Calabar South Local Government Area.

The injured driver was taken to a medical facility where he is currently receiving treatment, while the Ministry of Environment emergency response team was deployed immediately after the incident was reported.

Officials confirmed that the fallen tree was promptly removed, restoring movement and ensuring safety for road users and residents in the affected area.

The Cross Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Moses Osogi, said the government has commenced proactive measures to prevent similar incidents, stressing that public safety remains a top priority.

He explained that the ministry is intensifying efforts to identify, assess, and remove weak, aged, and potentially dangerous trees across Calabar metropolis.

According to him, the initiative is part of a broader environmental safety strategy aimed at reducing risks associated with urban vegetation in Cross Rivers State.

Our correspondent gathered that several trees already identified as hazardous have been marked for removal, while a comprehensive inspection exercise is ongoing across key parts of the city.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a safer and more sustainable environment through preventive environmental management.

In a related statement, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rosemary Onah, appealed to residents to assist by reporting any diseased or unstable trees within their communities for immediate assessment and action.

She assured the public that the ministry remains committed to protecting lives and property through continuous monitoring and environmental safety interventions across Cross Rivers State.
