Premier League giants Liverpool have parted ways with head coach Arne Slot after two seasons in charge, despite the Dutchman leading the club to a league title during his debut campaign.

Key Highlights:

  • Liverpool Football Club have sacked manager Arne Slot after two seasons.
  • Despite winning the Premier League in his first season, the team had a poor second season, finishing 5th.
  • The club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, said the decision was aimed at changing the team’s tactical direction.
  • Former AFC Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate to replace him.
  • Slot took over after Jürgen Klopp and is credited with winning Liverpool’s 20th league title.

The 47-year-old leaves Anfield following a disappointing second season in which Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League, their lowest points tally since the 2015-16 campaign, and 25 points behind champions Arsenal.

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, confirmed the decision in a statement, praising Slot’s achievements and professionalism during his tenure.

The club acknowledged his role in delivering Liverpool’s 20th league title in his first season and commended the leadership he displayed during challenging periods, including the aftermath of the death of forward Diogo Jota.

However, Liverpool’s hierarchy reportedly concluded that the team required a different tactical direction after a season that fell short of expectations despite qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Former AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Slot.

The Spaniard is understood to have held preliminary discussions with the club regarding the vacant position.

Iraola, 43, is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising coaches and earned widespread praise for his attacking style of play during his time at Bournemouth.

Under his guidance, Bournemouth finished just one place and three points behind Liverpool and secured qualification for the Europa League.

Slot was appointed Liverpool manager in 2024 following the departure of legendary coach Jürgen Klopp, who stepped down after a successful nine-year spell at the club.

Despite significant investment in the squad, including the record-breaking signings of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, Liverpool struggled to maintain the momentum that delivered the title in Slot’s first season.

The decision to dismiss Slot was reportedly taken by the club’s chief executive, Michael Edwards, and sporting director, Richard Hughes, who are now leading the search for a successor.

Liverpool described the managerial change as a strategic move aimed at restoring a more aggressive and attacking brand of football that previously brought the club major domestic and European success.

While Slot’s tenure has come to an abrupt end, the club stated that his legacy remains secure as the manager who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league championship and helped guide the team through one of the most challenging periods in its recent history.
