United States President, Donald Trump has announced a surprise three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, describing it as a possible turning point in the war that has devastated both countries for more than four years.
Trump disclosed on that the temporary truce will run from May 9 to May 11 and will include a complete suspension of military operations as well as a major prisoner exchange involving 1,000 captives from each side.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social account, Trump said the agreement followed direct appeals he personally made to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump stated.
According to him, the ceasefire coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations commemorating World War II, while also recognizing Ukraine’s role in the historic conflict.
“This ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each Country,” Trump added.
The American president further expressed optimism that the temporary truce could open the door to a permanent end to the conflict, which he described as the deadliest global confrontation since World War II.

“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” Trump declared, adding that negotiations aimed at ending the conflict permanently are still ongoing.
The announcement immediately sparked global attention, with analysts describing the proposed ceasefire and large-scale prisoner exchange as one of the most significant diplomatic developments since the war began.
If successfully implemented, the agreement would mark a rare pause in hostilities between Moscow and Kyiv after years of relentless fighting, international sanctions, military offensives and mounting casualties on both sides.
Neither the Kremlin nor the Ukrainian presidency had issued detailed independent statements on the full terms of the ceasefire at the time of filing this report, though Trump claimed both leaders had agreed to the arrangement.
