What started as online insults and arguments has now become a popular trend in Nigeria, where celebrities settle their disputes in a boxing ring instead of on social media.
The trend mixes sport, comedy, and internet culture, and it is getting a lot of attention online. Many are now questioning whether these events qualify as legitimate sports or are merely entertainment designed for fame and profit.
At the forefront of this trend is Portable, known for his controversial lifestyle and viral antics. He played a key role in popularizing celebrity boxing after his match against Charles Okocha, in one of the first major bouts. He subsequently, faced Speed Darlington in another fight sparked by online insults, illustrating how online feuds can translate into real-life entertainment.
The trend gained even more traction when Portable fought Carter Efe, a match that ended with Portable’s unexpected loss, surprising many and altering fans’ perceptions of him. This event also sparked discussions about whether these matches are becoming more serious or remain purely for entertainment.
The phenomenon is now extending into Nollywood, with ongoing tensions between Iyabo Ojo and Lizzy Anjorin leading to online jokes about a potential ring match between them.
Show promoter Paul Okoye had suggested a boxing match to settle their long-running dispute some time ago which Anjorin has just recently agreed, pointing to a possible move from online clashes to a real fight, if proper agreements and safety measures are put in place.

Although this fight has yet to materialize, it highlights the growing popularity of the concept.
The trend is fueled by social media, sponsorship opportunities, and a quest for attention and financial gain. These fights attract millions of views online, making them lucrative ventures.
However, there are concerns regarding safety, as many of the celebrities involved lack proper training as fighters, which can pose risks. Some critics argue that it promotes violence and prioritizes clout over genuine sport. However, celebrity boxing continues to expand and is emerging as a new form of entertainment in Nigeria.
