The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for sustained efforts to protect press freedom and deepen democratic accountability, even as it commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for improving its relationship with the media.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi to mark the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, the union said the global observance provides an opportunity to reaffirm the critical role of a free, independent, and responsible press in promoting democracy, human rights, and national development.

The NUJ noted that this year’s theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” resonates strongly with Nigeria’s socio-political realities, particularly in the face of evolving security challenges.

According to the union, journalism remains central to fostering peace, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring accountability across all levels of governance.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NUJ expressed cautious optimism over what it described as a noticeable improvement in engagements between the DSS and the media, citing a decline in reported cases of harassment, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests of journalists.

It praised the leadership of the DSS, especially the director-general, for encouraging a more professional and constructive relationship with media practitioners.

“The progress recorded demonstrates that cooperation between security agencies and the press is not only achievable but also necessary for building a peaceful and secure society,” the statement said.

However, the union stressed that such gains must be consolidated through sustained dialogue, transparency, and strict adherence to the rule of law, noting that press freedom remains a constitutional right and a cornerstone of national development.

The NUJ also urged the police and other security agencies to take a cue from the DSS by respecting the rights of journalists and creating an enabling environment for media practice without fear.

Reiterating its commitment to responsible journalism, the union charged its members to uphold ethical standards, emphasising accuracy, fairness, and accountability in their reportage.

It further underscored the need for collaboration between the media and security institutions, describing both as partners in the collective pursuit of peace, protection of human rights, and national progress.

“As we mark World Press Freedom Day 2026, all stakeholders—government, security agencies, the media, and citizens—must renew their commitment to safeguarding press freedom as a vital pillar for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria,” the NUJ stated.
