The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has felicitated journalists and workers across the Federal Capital Territory on the occasion of the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ike described this year’s theme: “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” as timely and reflective of the challenges facing workers nationwide.
She noted that insecurity and economic hardship continue to undermine productivity, threaten livelihoods, and erode the dignity of labour.
Ike commended journalists and media professionals in the FCT for their resilience and commitment to ethical journalism despite operating under difficult and often risky conditions.
“The persistence of insecurity not only endangers lives but also restricts access to information and hampers the ability of journalists to perform their duties effectively,” she said.
She added that poverty and rising economic pressures have also negatively impacted the welfare and morale of workers, stressing the need for urgent and sustained intervention.
The NUJ chairman called on governments at all levels to intensify efforts to improve national security and implement policies that directly address poverty.

Ike further emphasised the need for unity among union members, noting that collective advocacy remains key to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of workers.
She encouraged journalists and workers to remain steadfast and committed, adding that their contributions are vital to building a safer and more prosperous society.
