The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu has ordered the dismissal and criminal prosecution of the police officers linked to the extra-judicial killing of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, after concluding an expedited internal investigation.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, claimed the life of Mr. Mene Ogidi and drew widespread concern over police conduct.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed that all officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command on the orders of the inspector-general of police, and redeployed to Abuja, for disciplinary review.

He noted that the Force Disciplinary Committee, alongside other internal processes, carried out a thorough assessment which found that the principal officer, Nuhu Usman, breached established rules governing the use of firearms, particularly Force Order 237.

The police described the conduct as unlawful and inconsistent with professional standards expected of officers entrusted with the protection of lives.

Following the findings, the committee recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable personnel.

The recommendation has since been approved by the police hierarchy and forwarded to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for final ratification.

The police added that once administrative procedures are completed, the affected officers will be transferred to the appropriate judicial authorities to face prosecution over the killing.

Reiterating his stance, Disu emphasized that the police will not condone extra-judicial actions or abuse of authority, warning that erring officers will be held accountable under both disciplinary and criminal law.

He also conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be pursued in a transparent manner.

The police called on the public to remain calm, stating that the institution remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability across its ranks.
