Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has announced the establishment of a quarry centre in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Council, as part of efforts to accelerate infrastructure development across the state.
The governor made the announcement on Monday during the flag-off ceremony for the distribution of 70 brand-new Howo pickup trucks to the Ministry of Works and the Borno State Road Maintenance Agency (BORMA) at the Government House in Maiduguri.
The newly procured trucks are expected to significantly enhance the operational capacity of the Ministry of Works and its affiliated agencies by enabling faster delivery of construction materials and more efficient response to damaged roads.
Gov. Zulum explained that the quarry centre would supply locally sourced materials such as granite, gravel, and sharp sand to support both ongoing and future road construction projects.
He noted that the initiative would reduce reliance on external suppliers while lowering overall project costs.
“We have achieved a lot in health, education, agriculture, security, and road construction, among others.

“However, we still face challenges in constructing roads within the state, especially in rural communities,” the governor said.
He revealed that the quarry plant, established at a cost of about ₦3 billion, has a processing capacity of 120 tons per hour.
Addressing concerns over insecurity, Gov. Zulum noted that many contractors are reluctant to operate in parts of the state due to safety risks.
“No serious contractor is willing to deploy equipment to most of the project sites under the current security situation.
“This is why we have taken steps to strengthen the capacity of government agencies,” he said.
The governor added that his administration is focused on empowering the Ministry of Works, BORMA, and other relevant departments to independently handle road construction and maintenance projects.
