The National Assembly has reiterated its commitment to supporting the country’s security architecture, amid escalating attacks by insurgents and armed groups across the country.
Deputy spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Rep. Philip Agbese, disclosed this on Saturday in Abuja, assuring that lawmakers would continue to provide the necessary legislative backing, funding, and oversight to strengthen the operations of the military.
His comments follow a recent deadly assault on troops in Benisheikh, a strategic town along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Highway in Borno State, where insurgents reportedly killed Brigadier General Oseni Braimah and several soldiers.
The attack highlights the persistent security crisis in the North-East, where extremist groups linked to the Boko Haram insurgency continue to mount coordinated offensives despite years of military operations.
Rep. Agbese said the 10th National Assembly was fully aware of the evolving security threats, noting that Nigeria is simultaneously battling insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and widespread cases of kidnapping and violent crime.
“The National Assembly will stand firmly with our armed forces and all security agencies to defeat terrorists and bandits threatening the peace and unity of our country,” he said.
He praised frontline troops, describing them as patriots risking their lives daily to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity, while pledging improved welfare and better funding for military personnel.
The lawmaker also stressed the importance of accountability, stating that the legislature would intensify oversight of defence spending to ensure transparency and effective utilisation of public funds.

According to him, delays in the release of funds for critical military assets have continued to undermine security operations, insisting that timely financing remains central to addressing the country’s security challenges.
Rep. Agbese further called on citizens to support security agencies with credible intelligence, noting that the fight against terrorism and banditry requires collective national effort.
“The battle is not for the military alone. Nigerians must remain vigilant and provide useful information to aid security operations,” he added.
Despite the ongoing violence, the National Assembly expressed optimism that sustained collaboration between the executive, legislature, and security agencies would eventually restore stability in affected regions.
