The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has concluded an on-the-spot assessment of the impact of a recent windstorm disaster in communities within Aninri Local Government Area.
The assessment, carried out in four autonomous communities, was completed on April 9 by a joint team comprising NEMA, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
According to NEMA’s Information Officer, Mr Ezeani Nnanyelugo, the team inspected affected areas across Ukete, Achara, Ameke, and Mmafu communities in Oduma, where the windstorm struck on April 6 at about 9:30 p.m., accompanied by heavy rainfall.
The disaster caused widespread destruction, with several residential and public buildings losing their roofs. Shops, markets, schools, places of worship, electrical poles, farmlands, and economic trees were also severely damaged.

Nnanyelugo noted that although no lives were lost and no injuries recorded, many residents were left homeless and without livelihoods due to the scale of the destruction.
He added that the impact of the disaster has exceeded the coping capacity of the affected communities, stressing the need for urgent intervention.
On behalf of the Federal Government, the agency expressed sympathy with victims and assured them of continued support.
Community leaders commended the swift response by NEMA, ENSEMA, and the Red Cross, while appealing to both federal and state authorities, as well as humanitarian organisations and individuals, to provide relief materials and assistance to ease their suffering.
