Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma has come under intense criticism on social media following reports that he called for the release of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.

The remarks, which surfaced online over the weekend, have triggered widespread reactions, with many Nigerians condemning what they view as an insensitive position given the circumstances surrounding Ekweremadu’s conviction.

Ekweremadu is currently serving a prison sentence in the United Kingdom after his 2023 conviction in a high-profile organ trafficking case prosecuted under modern slavery laws. The case drew global attention and marked a significant legal milestone.

The controversy deepened after Bovi’s alleged comments questioned whether the victim involved in the case was a minor, a remark that sparked fresh outrage, particularly on X, where users criticised the comedian for appearing to support leniency in a matter widely regarded as a grave human rights violation.

Many commentators stressed that public figures must exercise restraint when addressing sensitive legal issues, warning that such statements could be interpreted as undermining justice and accountability.

Social media reactions reflected a mix of disappointment and criticism. Some users questioned the comedian’s judgment, while others argued that the episode highlights broader concerns about public discourse and political influence in Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, Bovi has not issued any official statement clarifying the context or intent of his remarks, leaving the debate to continue across digital platforms.
