A civil society organisation, 4ward Kano Group, has protested against the alleged plan by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to appoint Murtala Garo as the new deputy governor.
The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Nalado Habu, described the proposed appointment as deeply troubling, citing a pending criminal case instituted by the state government against Garo.
The position of deputy governor became vacant following the resignation of Aminu Gwarzo.
According to the group, it is contradictory for the same administration that initiated legal action against Garo over his tenure as the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs to consider elevating him to a higher office.
“We find it disturbing that an administration that has taken legal action against an individual over alleged misconduct is now under pressure to reward the same person with a higher and more sensitive office,” the statement read.

The group warned that such a move could erode public confidence in governance and accountability, stressing that the office of the deputy governor requires unquestionable integrity.
It maintained that any pending legal issues involving Garo should be conclusively addressed before any appointment is considered.
The organisation further alleged that some political actors were making covert efforts to push through the nomination and urged Gov. Yusuf to resist what it described as undue influence.
It also called on the Kano State House of Assembly to ensure due diligence and transparency in the confirmation process if the nomination is formally presented.
The group emphasised the need to uphold the rule of law and ethical governance, warning that any deviation could set a dangerous precedent in public office appointments.
It also urged President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders to distance themselves from the alleged plan and allow justice to take its course.
