Residents of Yenagoa turned out in large numbers as the Bayelsa State capital hosted a vibrant 10-kilometre marathon, marking another milestone in the state’s growing reputation as a hub for sports development in Nigeria.
The event, which attracted athletes from across the country and beyond, transformed the city into a lively arena of endurance, discipline, and community participation. From the starting signal to the final strides at the finish line, the race delivered a spectacle that combined competition with celebration.
Participants competed not only for fitness and recreation but also for prize rewards, with winners receiving recognition for their outstanding performances. For many others, the marathon offered an opportunity to promote healthy living and engage in physical activity, reinforcing the state’s ongoing wellness initiatives such as the monthly Prosperity Walk.
Speaking after the event, Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali, said the marathon reflects a broader vision to position Yenagoa among leading global cities that showcase their sporting culture through road races.
He noted that cities such as New York City, London, Madrid, Lagos, and Berlin have successfully used marathons to highlight their identity and attract global attention, adding that Yenagoa is steadily following the same path.
Igali explained that the temporary road closures required for the race were a small sacrifice for a larger goal of telling Bayelsa’s story through sports and creating opportunities for athletes.

Observers say the success of the event reflects deliberate investment in sports infrastructure and programming under the current administration, with Bayelsa steadily building a reputation for hosting competitive and well-organised sporting events.
With strong public participation and growing institutional support, the Yenagoa 10km Marathon is expected to become a regular fixture, further advancing the state’s ambition to emerge as a leading sports destination in Nigeria and Africa.
