Gunmen believed to be bandits ambushed the convoy of Alhaji Mouktar Lugga, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Zamfara State, on the Funtua-Gusau highway yesterday evening.

The attack occurred near Kucheri village around 6:16 p.m., underscoring the persistent insecurity in northern Nigeria.

Lugga was returning to Gusau from an official engagement when the assailants suddenly emerged from both sides of the road, firing at the vehicle carrying him, his driver, and two other passengers.

A bullet reportedly shattered the windshield, narrowly missing the driver, while another attacker’s gun malfunctioned at close range.

Despite the intensity of the ambush, the driver maintained composure and accelerated out of the danger zone, ensuring all passengers escaped unharmed.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara State, where banditry, kidnappings, and highway attacks remain prevalent despite sustained military operations.
