Tensions between the United States and its European allies have escalated following controversial remarks by former US President Donald Trump about French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife.
According to reports, Trump mocked Macron during a private meeting, allegedly imitating a French accent and suggesting that France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron, treats the president poorly. The remarks, which later became public, sparked immediate backlash across France’s political landscape.
Senior French officials condemned the comments as inappropriate and lacking in diplomatic decorum, particularly at a time of heightened global tensions linked to developments involving Iran. A parliamentary leader described the remarks as unbecoming of a figure of Trump’s global stature.
Even critics of Macron rallied to his defence. Prominent opposition figures characterised the comments as “absolutely unacceptable,” highlighting a rare moment of unity among French political actors.
The controversy deepened after a video clip of Trump’s remarks circulated online, in which he appeared to reference a past incident involving the Macrons—claims previously dismissed by the French presidency as inaccurate and misleading.

Trump also used the moment to renew his criticism of NATO, describing the alliance as ineffective and questioning its ability to respond to major global crises.
The incident marks the latest strain in relations between Washington and European capitals, raising fresh concerns about the state of transatlantic ties amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.
