The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be set to worsen as Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has signaled a possible defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Governor Mohammed made this known after a closed-door meeting with an ADC delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, at the Presidential Lodge in Bauchi.
Speaking after the meeting, the governor said efforts to resolve the protracted crisis within the PDP—both at the national level and in Bauchi State—had failed to yield meaningful results.
He disclosed that two committees had earlier been constituted in Abuja and Bauchi to evaluate the political future of his camp, including the possibility of aligning with another party.
According to him, remaining in a political environment where his group feels unwelcome is no longer sustainable. He stressed the need to identify a viable opposition platform ahead of future elections.

Mohammed described the ADC as a “preferred destination,” though he noted that consultations were still ongoing and no final decision had been reached.
Earlier, Lawal said the ADC delegation visited the governor at the instance of the party’s national leadership to formally invite him to join its ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He described Mohammed as a courageous political figure whose defection would boost the party’s strength and national appeal.
The former SGF also called for greater unity among opposition parties, warning that failure to build a cohesive front could have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s political future.
The meeting comes shortly after Governor Mohammed convened a stakeholders’ meeting of the PDP in Bauchi in a bid to address internal disagreements and restore unity within the party.
Political analysts say the governor’s potential defection could significantly alter the political dynamics in Bauchi State and beyond, particularly as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
