The federal cabinet is beginning to feel the weight of early 2027 political maneuvering, as Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, has officially stepped down from his position.

His resignation, which became public on Monday, March 30, 2026, marks one of the first high-profile exits following a directive by President Bola Tinubu requiring all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to resign on or before March 31, 2026, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Sununu, a former federal lawmaker from Kebbi State, is widely believed to be repositioning for another political contest, though details of his next move remain closely guarded.

Meanwhile, indications have emerged that Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, may also be on his way out of the cabinet as he reportedly prepares to join the race for the Bauchi State governorship.

The unfolding developments signal what analysts describe as the early stages of intense political realignment within the ruling government, as key figures begin to weigh their ambitions ahead of the next general elections.

Observers say the resignations are more than routine compliance with electoral guidelines they reflect a growing undercurrent of succession politics within the administration.

With more exits expected in the coming days, attention is now turning to how the president will manage the evolving cabinet dynamics, and whether the wave of resignations could impact governance as political activities gradually take centre stage.
