President Bola Tinubu has announced the creation of a dedicated welfare fund to support members of the military, including personnel injured in active service and families of fallen heroes.
The initiative was unveiled on Sunday as part of activities marking the president’s 74th birthday, which he described as an opportunity to honour the sacrifices and commitment of military personnel defending the nation.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the president directed the office of the accountant-general of the federation to establish a special account for the management of the fund.
The scheme is designed to provide targeted support to wounded service members, as well as widows, widowers, and children of deceased personnel.
Demonstrating personal commitment to the initiative, Tinubu pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office as seed funding for the welfare scheme, underscoring the need to recognise and support the sacrifices of military personnel.

The president stressed that caring for members of the military and their families should not be seen as charity, but as a national obligation owed to those who risk their lives in defence of the country.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the welfare of military personnel, ensuring that their service is met with dignity, proper care, and sustained institutional support.
