The leadership of the National Assembly of Nigeria has called for the adoption of automatic tickets for serving lawmakers under the All Progressives Congress, setting off fresh debate within the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the party’s 4th Elective National Convention held at Eagle Square Abuja, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, said granting automatic tickets to incumbent legislators would help sustain policy continuity and strengthen ongoing reforms driven by the administration of President Tinubu.
Abbas argued that shielding lawmakers from intense intra-party contests would allow them to concentrate on legislative responsibilities at a time when the country is undergoing significant economic and institutional changes. He maintained that stability within the legislature is essential for deepening governance and ensuring the success of reform policies.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, supported the proposal, describing it as a strategic step toward consolidating the gains recorded by the ruling party. He commended the organisation of the convention and highlighted achievements of the current administration across key sectors, including education financing, agriculture, rail transport and infrastructure development.
Despite the strong backing from top party figures, the proposal has stirred concern among some stakeholders who warn that automatic tickets could weaken internal democracy and limit opportunities for new entrants within the party structure.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his address to delegates, did not directly endorse the proposal but stressed the importance of unity, discipline and cohesion within party ranks as preparations gradually begin for the next electoral cycle.
The convention also observed a minute of silence in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari and other departed members of the party, reflecting on their contributions to the growth of the APC.
As discussions continue, the ruling party faces a delicate task of balancing the need for legislative continuity with the preservation of democratic principles within its internal processes. The outcome of this debate is expected to shape political alignments and party strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
