Social media influencer Winifred Ogbuja is facing intense public criticism following renewed attention to the 2018 rape case involving the late Ochanya Ogbanje.
The backlash followed a series of memes shared by Ogbuja on X, a move many Nigerians described as insensitive given the gravity of the case and the circumstances surrounding Ochanya’s death.
Ochanya died in 2018 from complications linked to prolonged sexual abuse, including vesicovaginal fistula, a case that sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice.
In 2022, a court acquitted lecturer Andrew Ogbuja, who had been accused in connection with the case, while his son, Victor Ogbuja, remains at large. Ochanya’s stepmother, Felicia Ogbuja, was convicted for failing to protect the victim despite being aware of the abuse.
Court proceedings had earlier suggested that Winifred Ogbuja may have witnessed an incident related to the abuse but did not cooperate with investigators, an issue that has now resurfaced in public discourse.

Responding to the allegations, Ogbuja denied having knowledge of the abuse, stating that she was young at the time and spent most of her years in boarding school, limiting her awareness of events.
However, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has challenged her account, citing court records which he said contradict her claims.
The renewed attention has reignited public outrage, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and urging caution and sensitivity when discussing cases involving abuse and trauma.
