Ahead of the forthcoming National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, a party stalwart in Cross River State, Chris Edadi, has described the exercise as a unifying platform aimed at reconciling factions and strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Edadi, who serves as Financial Secretary of the party in Cross River State, made the remarks on Friday during a radio phone-in programme in Calabar titled “Let’s Talk Nigeria.” He expressed confidence that the convention would bring together various interest groups within the party under a shared objective.

He noted that consultations and reconciliation efforts were already at an advanced stage, adding that the party leadership was working towards broad consensus before the convention. According to him, ongoing peace talks have achieved significant progress, with most disagreements nearing resolution.

Edadi maintained that internal disputes are a normal feature of political organisations, stressing that the PDP has continued to manage its differences through dialogue and internal mechanisms. He added that recent court rulings and the party’s “win-win” approach have helped to stabilise the situation.

He also expressed optimism that the convention would attract renewed support for the party, with some members expected to return as political alignments begin to shift ahead of the next election cycle.

On the issue of zoning, Edadi argued that competence and merit should take precedence in leadership selection, warning that rigid adherence to zoning arrangements could undermine the emergence of capable leaders. At the same time, he acknowledged that zoning can serve as a stabilising factor when properly managed.

The PDP stalwart called on members and supporters to remain committed to the party and avoid aligning strictly with individual candidates, urging a focus on unity and institutional strength as preparations for 2027 intensify.
