At least nine soldiers are feared dead after gunmen launched a deadly ambush on military personnel in Kebbi State, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over the deteriorating security situation in northwestern Nigeria.

The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, reportedly left several other troops injured, with security sources describing it as a well-coordinated assault carried out by heavily armed attackers. Initial reports suggest the soldiers were taken by surprise, allowing the assailants to inflict significant casualties before reinforcements could arrive.

Although full details of the operation remain unclear, local officials and security insiders say the ambush reflects a troubling pattern of increasingly sophisticated attacks targeting both civilians and security forces in the region.

The latest incident highlights the deepening crisis in the North-West, where armed groups have stepped up activities, including kidnappings, village raids, and direct confrontations with military units. Analysts warn that the evolving nature of the threat, combined with porous borders linking Nigeria to neighbouring countries, has made it easier for criminal networks and extremist elements to regroup and expand operations.

Security experts note that such ambushes point to intelligence gaps and operational challenges, raising questions about troop safety and the broader strategy to contain violence in affected states.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to release an official statement confirming the casualty figures or providing a detailed account of the incident. However, investigations are said to be ongoing, with efforts underway to track down those responsible and prevent further attacks.

The tragedy adds to growing anxiety among residents, as communities continue to bear the brunt of an unrelenting security crisis that shows little sign of easing.
