The Delta State Police Command has arrested five individuals, including a community leader and chief organiser of the Ozoro festival, over alleged assaults on women during the annual event in Delta State.

Police spokesperson Bright Edafe disclosed the development, identifying the principal suspect as Chief Omorede Sunday, alongside four others from Oramudu quarters in Ozoro.

According to Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. He added that the command remains committed to ensuring that all those involved are identified and brought to justice.

The arrests followed widespread public concern after videos surfaced online showing groups of young men allegedly attacking women during the festival. The footage appeared to show victims being harassed and physically assaulted, sparking outrage across social media platforms.

The incidents reportedly occurred on March 19 during the festival, amid claims that women found outside their homes during the event were targeted for harassment. Authorities have not confirmed all allegations circulating online, but investigations are ongoing.

Edafe described the development as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that the police command strongly condemns any form of violence against women.

The Delta State Government also denounced the incident. Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, described the acts as barbaric and called for swift justice.

He urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and prosecute those responsible, while also calling on community leaders and festival organisers to strengthen safety measures at public events.

The state government reiterated its zero tolerance for gender-based violence, warning that offenders will face the full weight of the law.

The incident has triggered strong reactions online, with many Nigerians demanding accountability and improved protection for women at public gatherings.
