The political structure of the Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State has suffered a major setback following the resignation of several influential stakeholders, a development that observers say could reshape the political landscape of the state ahead of future elections.
Among the prominent figures who have exited the party are former senator Gershom Bassey, former governor Liyel Imoke, and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, all widely regarded as major power brokers within the party’s structure in the state.
As of the time of filing this report from Calabar, Senator Gershom Bassey, who previously represented Cross River South in the National Assembly, confirmed his resignation from the PDP.
Bassey’s decision came only hours after former governor Liyel Imoke also announced his exit from the party, citing what he described as a prolonged internal crisis that has continued to weaken the organisation.
Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, who currently represents Cross River North in the Senate, had earlier defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress, while Imoke is now associated with the African Democratic Congress, further highlighting the growing political realignment in the state.
In a formal resignation letter dated March 12, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Ward 9 in Calabar South Local Government Area, Gershom Bassey announced that he was withdrawing his membership of the party with immediate effect.
The former lawmaker, who represented Cross River South during the 8th and 9th National Assembly, described the decision as painful but necessary. He blamed persistent internal disputes, divisions within the party leadership, and unresolved conflicts that he said have eroded unity and weakened the PDP’s founding ideals.
Bassey stated in the letter that he had proudly helped to build the party over the years and had invested considerable effort in strengthening its political structure. However, he expressed concern that the party had gradually drifted away from the principles that once defined it.

He also lamented what he described as the failure of party elders and leaders to confront the internal crisis threatening the future of the PDP. According to him, the deepening divisions have steadily weakened the cohesion of the party and undermined the discipline and unity that once made it a formidable political force.
The former senator further noted that witnessing the gradual decline of the party has been particularly disappointing for those who were present at its founding and had worked to build it into one of Nigeria’s most influential political platforms.
Despite his departure, Bassey expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve under the party and acknowledged the relationships and experiences he gained during his years in the PDP.
Political observers say the wave of resignations by high-profile figures signals growing uncertainty within the PDP in Cross River State. Analysts believe the exits could significantly affect the party’s strength and influence in the state as political alliances continue to shift.
The development marks another critical moment for the PDP in Cross River, where internal disagreements, defections, and emerging political alignments are increasingly redefining the balance of power.
