Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has dismissed allegations by presidential aide Daniel Bwala that he attempted to recruit him into his 2023 presidential campaign.
Obi, through a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, described Bwala’s claim as baseless and not deserving of a response, insisting that he had no dealings with the presidential spokesperson.
Bwala currently serves as Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The former governor of Anambra State said he does not engage in what he termed “transactional politics,” stressing that individuals like Bwala were never part of his political activities.
“Normally, we would not dignify Bwala’s baseless accusations with a reply, given his well-documented history of dishonesty,” the statement said.

“However, we consider it necessary to address the issue for the sake of the public who may be misled.”
The statement further maintained that Obi’s political approach is rooted in good governance and the pursuit of a better society, rather than paying individuals to promote political causes.
According to the statement, Obi would rather use resources to support development initiatives such as providing school desks for children than sponsor propaganda against political opponents.
The rebuttal followed claims by Bwala during an interview with media personality Daddy Freeze that Obi had attempted to enlist him in the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign.
Bwala alleged that the request was conveyed through former President Olusegun Obasanjo during a meeting in London involving Obi’s running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, and other political figures.
He said the meeting took place at a hotel where discussions were held about the campaign structure ahead of the 2023 election.
According to Bwala, he declined the alleged request despite his respect for Obasanjo. He also claimed that Ambassador Amuchi Osuk had been appointed by Obi’s team to coordinate early campaign activities.
