Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has signed a 45-year sub-concession agreement with Nigerdock for the development, operation and maintenance of an exclusive container terminal at Snake Island Port in Lagos.
The Chief Marketing Officer of Nigerdock, Kevin Johnson-Azuara, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, noting that the facility will occupy about 30 hectares within the Snake Island Port.
According to the statement, the container terminal is expected to be completed by 2028 and will feature a 910-metre quay, six ship-to-shore cranes, two ship berths, three barge berths and a draft depth of up to 18 metres.
Nigerdock’s Chief Executive Officer, Maher Jarmakani, said the partnership marks a major milestone in efforts to expand port capacity and strengthen Nigeria’s maritime logistics sector.
He said the collaboration would create a dedicated operational base for MSC in Nigeria while attracting significant foreign direct investment into the country.
“We are thrilled to take this step forward in our partnership with MSC to develop a world-class container terminal within Snake Island Port. This gives the world’s leading shipping line a home in Nigeria and brings significant foreign direct investment into the country to accelerate growth in the maritime and logistics industry,” Jarmakani said.
MSC President, Diego Aponte, also described the project as a strategic investment aimed at improving service delivery and strengthening trade across Africa.
He noted that the terminal would boost efficiency in cargo handling, expand logistics capacity and enhance the status of Snake Island Port as a key global shipping hub.
“Completing this key phase in the development of Snake Island Container Terminal with Nigerdock and our trusted partners demonstrates MSC Group’s commitment to providing excellent service to our customers in Nigeria and throughout Africa,” Aponte said.
